When the year 2020 was heralded in, the whole world was exhilarated by the collective anticipation of a new decade. 2020 held a new beginning and a multitude of promise and opportunity. Little did anyone know that the path ahead would be scattered with challenges, turmoil and often anguish, at a global scale. If these past two years have taught us anything, it is the importance of mental health.
The COVID-19 pandemic has without doubt taken a major toll on everybody’s mental health, regardless of religion, gender and nationality, and reached far and wide to all corners of our world. There was no escape or reprieve and each individual tapped into their own personal coping measures. The fear of contracting the virus significantly changed our daily lives as more and more restrictions were implemented in an attempt to slow the spread of the virus. Our “new normal” became working from home, learning online for school and diminished physical contact with our friends, family and co-workers. Amidst this toxic cocktail of fear, stress and worry, it is understandable that peoples’ mental health is compromised.
Some groups such as healthcare and other frontline workers, those living alone or the elderly and those with pre-existing mental health conditions have been deeply affected. All of these issues have brought mental health to the forefront of daily discussion. It has opened up a snowballing dialogue on the subject and never before has its importance taken such a prominent seat at the world affairs table, as seen by WHO’s inclusion of mental health in their Sustainable Development Goals.
According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five Americans or about 44 million adults a year will suffer from a serious mental health condition. Mental illnesses affect 19% of the adult population, 46% of teenagers and 13% of children each year. Depression is one of the leading causes of disability, while suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29 year-olds.
The importance of caring for mental health
Mental health is crucial to leading a healthy, balanced life and when our emotional and psychological state is unwell, it impacts how we feel, think and act every day. If our emotional health is compromised, it is difficult to be productive and effective at work or school and can lead to strains in our relationships too. It becomes more and more difficult to be our best selves when we need to deal with stress, anxiety and worry.
Despite the eye-opening statistics however, less than half of those affected seek treatment, often because of the societal stigma associated with mental health. Yet untreated mental illness usually leads to even further and deeper problems such as declining performance at school and work, less job opportunities and increased risk of suicide.
What you can do to help
Even though in the last decades the stigma surrounding mental illness has been slowly abating, studies show that negative sentiment is still high mainly due to media stereotyping and a lack of education. This unfortunate situation impacts the number of people who actively seek proper treatment.
There are some simple steps that you can take to keep your mental health in check. It starts with a shift in lifestyle and includes regular exercise, eating healthy meals, maintaining a positive attitude and outlook, taking breaks when needed and getting quality sleep at night.
There has also been increasing interest in the potential benefits of CBD for mental health ailments. Although more research is needed to determine the positive effects, some existing studies suggest that CBD shows gains in the treatment of some conditions including depression, anxiety and sleep issues.
